Patagonia's Leading Industries

Patagonia’s leading industries are mining, livestock (notably sheep), agriculture (wheat and fruit production), and oil after its discovery near Comodoro Rivadavia, Chubut Province, in 1907. Energy production is also a crucial part of the Patagonian economy. In the second half of the 20th century, tourism became an ever more important part of Patagonia's economy.

Weather

The climate is less severe than supposed by most travelers. The mean annual temperature is 52 °F and the average extremes 78 °F and −29.5 °F, whereas at Bahia Blanca near the Atlantic coast and just outside the northern confines of Patagonia the annual temperature is 59 °F and the range much greater. The prevailing winds are westerly, and whereas the eastern hills receive an annual precipitation of less than 800 mm, on the plains it may be as low as 200 mm.

To enjoy Patagonia, the best time is the Argentine summer, between the months of December and March, although this excludes snow lovers.  Snow lovers should plan to visit Patagonia in the Argentine winter, between July and September.
