On Friday, April 15, 2011 the City of Oakland, Port of Oakland and Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce organized the second annual Mega Region Summit.
This year's event was designed to support President Obama's National Export Initiative (NEI). U.S. Commercial Service Deputy Assistant Secretary Ro Khanna was the featured NEI guest speaker. Oakland Export Assistance Center Director Rod Hirsch was the moderator of the "Importance of Exports" panel. Panel members included Lisa Kelly with corporate strategic partner, FedEx, and Linsey Gallagher with The California Wine Institute, who is a member of the Northern California District Export Council, along with trade association representatives and private firms.
The organizers drafted a Regional Export Initiative document reflecting the goals of the NEI adapted to the Northern California Mega Region. Mayors from around Northern California, such Oakland Mayor Jean Quan and San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed signed the document at the end of the event and a copy was provided to Ro Khanna to bring back to Washington, DC. There were approximately 300 attendees at the event in Oakland’s Marriott Hotel Convention Center.
