On Tuesday, May 22, 2012, the Northern California World Trade Center (NCWTC) hosted a luncheon at the Conference Center of the University of California, Davis from 11:00 am to 1:30pm. The luncheon focused on manufacturing and improving the manufacturing sector in California and the United States. As a long-time partner of the NCWTC, the Sacramento Export Assistance Center, helped promote the event and was represented at the event by Director George Tastard, Senior Trade Specialist Anthony Hill, and Trade Assistant Brian Saunders.
The luncheon began with opening remarks given by Renee Nunes Taylor, President and CEO of the Northern California World Trade Center. The Chancellor of UC Davis, Linda P.B. Katehi, spoke of the importance of outreach and what the school had done in the past to achieve their goal. There were also brief remarks from Ashil Abhat, the Senior Vice President, Market Executive of Global Commercial Banking with Bank of America. Next the Honorable Congresswoman Doris O. Matsui spoke about the importance of manufacturing and the efforts being made in congress to assist manufacturers in gaining access to foreign markets.
The keynote speaker for the event was Peter M. Perez, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Manufacturing, International Trade Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce. DAS Perez discussed his years of industry experience and how he is now utilizing that experience at the federal level to enhance exports for all American businesses. He spoke about a number of current issues faced by manufacturers in international trade and resources for companies to help them access foreign markets.
The luncheon also included a panel discussion moderated by Roger Niello, President and CEO of the Sacramento Metro Chamber. The panel included Michael Bridge, Vice President, Market Development & Strategy, PASCO Scientific; Becky Johnson, Director of Public Affairs, Siemens Industry, Mobility Division; and Larry Kelley, President of McClellan Business Park. Each panelist gave brief remarks about their company’s manufacturing experience and issues of concern for them. Mr. Kelley of McClellan Business Park spoke on behalf of small manufacturing companies in the business park.
As an event sponsor, the Sacramento Export Assistance Center had a booth at the entrance of the conference room where ITS Tony Hill and Trade Assistant Brian Saunders had the opportunity to speak to participants about the services provided by the U.S. Commercial Service.
