City Profile: Bangalore
Bangalore is the principal administrative, cultural, commercial and industrial center of the South Indian State of Karnataka. The city is called by many names, including: India’s knowledge hub, Silicon Valley, Aerospace and machine tools hub of India, and the Garden city of India.
Since the early 1980’s when the technology giant Texas Instruments discovered its potential as a high-tech city, Bangalore has seen a major technology boom. It is now home to more than 2,000 high-tech companies, including domestic giants like Wipro and Infosys. Increasingly, the city is also seeing a high growth in biotech, healthcare and construction industries. Bangalore has around 200 biotech companies making it the largest biotechnology cluster in India. The state government has also initiated a number of measures to promote Bangalore as a nanotechnology hub on the lines of IT and biotech sectors.
Besides, Bangalore has large public sector companies, such as Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), BEML Limited, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), and HMT Limited. Bangalore is also home to some of India’s premier scientific research establishments, such as National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL), Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Central Manufacturing Technology Institute (CMTI), National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) and a couple of national defense research laboratories. The city is also home to several of India’s recognized college and research institutions for higher education, like the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), and the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT).
In the last two decades, many private sector and multinational companies set up base in Bangalore to take advantage of the vast talent pool available in the city. The clustering of IT, biotech, aerospace, defense and electronics-related industries in Bangalore and the large public sector enterprises attracted people from all parts of India, giving the city a very cosmopolitan character and culture, very different from most other Indian cities. Per latest census data, Bangalore has a population of over 8.5 million. However, the growth of the city has not been commensurate with the development of infrastructure, which has drastically lagged behind. To address this issue, the state government has initiated several infrastructure projects, including the Metro Rail and signal-free elevated expressways to ease the city traffic which currently has more than 4 million vehicles; and over 1000 vehicles being added on a daily basis to Bangalore’s roads.
The U.S. is the largest investor in Bangalore – with over 150 U.S. companies operating in the city across a range of sectors; and consequently the largest trading partner for Bangalore.
Climate: The city enjoys salubrious climate almost throughout the year. Its tree-lined streets and abundant greenery have led to it being called the 'Garden City' of India. The peak season in Bangalore falls between October and February, when most tourists visit this part of India.
