November 5-6, 2013, CS Kenya hosted eight ECON officers and staff from CS Partner Posts in Ethiopia, South Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, and Tanzania for training in commercial tradecraft. SCO Francis Peters and Sr. Commercial Specialist Humphrey Lilech led the training which covered CS services, advocacy, trade complaints, case studies, and other key areas. Economic growth in East Africa is expected to remain among the fastest in Africa this year, and demand for the services of the U.S. Commercial Service and its Partner Posts continue to rise.

On October 25, 1013, Kenya Airways received delivery of a new Boeing 777-300ER aircraft valued at over $300 million. U.S. Ambassador to Kenya, Robert F. Godec, was the guest of honor and gave opening remarks at the welcoming ceremony hosted by Kenya Airways. SCO Peters participated in the welcoming event, which featured representatives from Boeing, GE, and the Kenya Airport Authority, and which took place at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport as the jet landed after a 16-hour non-stop flight from Seattle. The aircraft, the largest in Africa, strengthens the long haul capability of the airline which will soon initiate non-stop flights to China. In 2014, Kenya Airways will receive deliveries of two additional Boeing 777-300ERs and the first of nine deliveries of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

As a 2013 signature event of the DBIA Campaign, CS Kenya supported the sub-Saharan Africa Certified Franchise Trade Mission from Sept 30- Oct 1. Co-sponsored with the International Franchise Association and the Franchise Times, this mission supported 10 participating brands, representing industries ranging from construction equipment and fitness centers, to quick serve and casual dining concepts. These U.S. companies met with over 60 potential Kenyan and regional investors in on-on-one meetings. SCO Francis Peters and Commercial Assistant Catherine Malinda briefed the delegates on business environment in Kenya and also organized site tours and educational sessions which addressed key topics such as franchise law and economic trends. This conference drew in local media, providing high-level exposure for the brands in Kenya and the East Africa Region.
