1st Subway Store in Romania

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on April 10 at 10:00 AM in downtown Bucharest to open the SUBWAY® flagship store. His Excellency Mr. Mark H. Gitenstein, U.S. Ambassador along with his wife Libby inaugurated the event by delivering the keynote speech. Also present at the ceremony were Keith Kirkham, Commercial Counselor, American Embassy – Bucharest and Valentin Metodiev Radomirski, Ambassador of Bulgaria.

SUBWAY® is the world’s largest of its kind with more than 36,000 locations in 99 countries.  Worldwide the SUBWAY® brand serves nearly 2,800 sandwiches and salads every minute. It’s said if you were to place all the sandwiches they serve in a year end-to-end it would circle the earth six times.

That is a pretty amazing success for a company that was founded in 1965 by a 17 year-old high school graduate, Fred DeLuca and a family friend, Dr. Peter Buck. Since then, SUBWAY® is bound to serve fresh, made-to-order sandwiches.

The master franchisor for the region is Mr. Rumen Radev, an experienced Bulgarian sales manager. After opening 28 stores in Bulgaria, he is now finding new franchisees to expand in Romania.  He plans to open 6-7 stores in the remainder of 2012, with the goal of 30 units in the next four years. Cristian Ştefănescu is the owner of the first Romanian SUBWAY® unit.
