RE/MAX International was founded in 1973 by Dave and Gail Liniger who was dissatisfied with the way real estate business was conducted at the time in the USA.
Most real estate companies used the commission- split system, which required sales professionals to forfeit half of their commissions to their brokers in exchange for an office environment and company services. This meant that the top producers contributed the most to the operations overhead, thus supporting the lower producers in every office. Support services were lacking in quality.
RE/MAX believed that to attract and retain the best agents, brokers must offer maximum compensation, advanced support services and the freedom to succeed. Agents would share office overheads and pay management fees, and in return a wide variety of real estate services and more control over their business.
In 1995 the South African region was founded by Peter and Val Gillmor and in the space of 17 years established RE/MAX as one of the real estate leaders in the country. Peter and Val had a vision of changing the way real estate agents work in South Africa as Dave and Gail did in 1973. This vision and success grew RE/MAX Southern Africa to over 1800 estate agents operating out of 170 independently owned and operated offices.
The Growth of RE/MAX worldwide is due to RE/MAX taking proven techniques and adapting them to local markets, thereby developing a service of tools that real estate professionals find invaluable.
Some of the innovations services created by RE/MAX to help its members become ever more professional and successful include:
• An international and local agent- to- agent referral network
• Advanced training courses, both on demand online and in the classroom, via RE/MAX University
• State of the art technology tools and internet and extranet websites
• Television advertising campaigns valued at R8 million to promote everyone in RE/MAX, which in return increases our website viewers to 165 000 visitors a month

In an industry rife with frequent changes and turnover in ownerships and management of major real estate networks, RE/MAX international and Southern Africa remains owned and directed by its founders.
